Kiss and Tell - Looking back on a decade of midnight kisses

10 years and 2 days ago at the stroke of midnight I was a 13 year old eighth grader with a boyfriend who was sure he was going to get a french kiss for the first time from me....he didn't.

I had a party in my parents' barn with my good friends in attendance; I can't remember much about what we did, but I do remember my midnight kiss. I think there was much anticipation and discussion among my friends, or at least definitely with Kiley and probably with Bridget and possibly with Britni, about whether I would have my first french kiss to ring in the New Millenium. It seemed perfectly appropriate to all of them...it seemed perfectly terrifying to me.

What I do remember about that kiss is that my head was turned the wrong way (I apparently was still at a kissing stage where there is just one way to turn your head to kiss), it was uncomfortably long for a non-french kiss (I'm sure that poor boy was hoping), and I kept thinking please Lord Jesus, don't let him slip me the tongue.

The best part of my night was definitely not the kiss, though my first french kiss wasn't much better a year and a half later from a different boy. The best part about that night could have been that I wore my new silver fleece / goose down vest from Kids Gap (I still have it, just washed it today!)or that my mom and dad flipped the breaker to the barn's electricity so that all of my friends for one split second thought that Y2K was real.

the things you remember and treasure.

I don't remember all of my midnights as new years came and went, but my favorite still has to be my Senior year of high school, where my boyfriend-now-husband taught me how to climb on to the tip-top of his church, where we watched fireworks and had an awkward turn-around-to-kiss-while-trying-not-to-fall-off-the-roof-and-die moment. What a year that turned out to be...

This year was also fun - we got together with two other families and played pictionary and catch phrase with my four year old. He won a trophy. There was actually no kiss at midnight- it did not occur to me. What was I thinking?

I'll have to make up for it all year.
